User Guide

Safety

  • NO LOOSE ITEMS WHILE OPERATING. No loose jewelry, hoodie strings, long hair needs to be tied back. This is the biggest risk when operating a lathe - if it grabs something on you and pulls you in, you will not be able to break free.
  • SAFETY GLASSES. Hot metal chips and oil will fly off this machine. Protect yourself.
  • NEVER LEAVE THE CHUCK KEY IN THE HEADSTOCK, EVEN FOR A SECOND. It can become a deadly projectile if you turn on the lathe with it in there.
  • Do not reach over the headstock when turning on the lathe. Reach with your right arm instead. Nobody wants to get caught in a machine capable of carving hardened steel.
  • Make sure work is secured before turning on the lathe. While it's not moving, try to wiggle the piece in the chuck. If it moves at all, check your setup for problems.
  • Ensure work and headstock will not collide with any part of the machine. With the power off, spin the chuck by hand to check this.
  • Use sharp tools! Dull tools can catch the work and break the tool or the lathe itself.

Starting the Machine

  • Ensure lubrication is completed before starting. Follow the lubrication diagram to make sure all required points are properly serviced.
  • Confirm controls are disengaged. Check that the feed engage lever (22) and thread-cutting lever (20) are in the disengaged positions, and that the changewheel cover is securely in place.
  • Select feed settings before operation. Choose feed axis (cross or longitudinal) using the apron push-pull knob (21), set feed direction with the headstock lower selector (8), and select the correct feed rate using gearbox selectors (6) and (7). Gear engagement may require manually turning the spindle.
  • Set spindle speed correctly. Use the speed range selector dial (10) to choose range A, B, or C, then set the desired speed with lever (9). Turning the spindle by hand may help gear engagement.
  • Switch on the electrical supply. Use the mains isolator (1), located as a red knob on the left-hand end of the control station. Confirm power is on via the white indicator lamp (10) near the emergency stop (9).
  • Select spindle rotation direction. Use the forward/reverse switch (2) to choose the correct rotation.
  • Start the spindle safely. Press the start push-button (5) to begin operation.
  • Control feed motion as needed. Engage or disengage the feed using lever (22) during operation.
  • Use the emergency stop when needed. The machine can be stopped immediately using the emergency stop pushbutton (4).
  • Observe maximum faceplate speeds. Do not exceed 1500 rpm when using a 260 mm (12") diameter faceplate.
  • Avoid high speeds in coarse feed range. The coarse screwcutting/feed range "J" must not be used at spindle speeds above 750 rpm.
