Round loom knitting is a fast, needle-free craft used to make tubes of fabric like hats, cowls, and scarves by wrapping yarn around plastic or wooden pegs and lifting the loops over with a hook.
About our machine
- The Textiles Lab has several round 24 peg knitting looms in various sizes. The looms are ring-shaped tools lined with vertical pegs used to knit without traditional needles. Users can wrap yarn around the pegs and use a hook tool to lift and loop the stitches.

Safety
- Loom knitting is generally a safe, accessible craft, but physical strain and ergonomic issues can occur during long crafting sessions.
Tips
- Basic Steps to Start Knitting
- Cast On: Make a slipknot, place it on the anchor peg, and wrap the working yarn around each consecutive peg in a counterclockwise or clockwise circle (commonly using an e-wrap or U-wrap stitch).
- Knit Rows: Wrap the yarn above the existing loop on each peg, then use your hook to lift the bottom loop up and over the top loop, dropping it to the inside of the loom.
- Repeat: Continue working round and round until your cylindrical project reaches the desired length.
- Bind Off: Move loops sequentially or use a basic crochet/gather removal method to safely take the completed work off the loom without unravelling.

Maintenance
- Inspect plastic pegs regularly.
- Avoid yanking excessively hard on stuck yarn to prevent snapping a peg.
- Wipe down the pegs and grooves between projects to remove accumulated yarn fuzz and dust.
